Did you know that now every Friday is “First Friday” in Macon? This means that the open container laws are suspended on all Friday nights in downtown Macon. Although the booze is flowing freely every Friday night, “First Friday” is still special. Here are my top picks for this month’s First Friday:

Head over to the Hay House on Saturday, April 10th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for “Hay Days.” Admission is free and there will be educational and fun activities for the whole family, including hands-on activities, performances, tours, exhibits and games.

I really enjoy baseball, but driving to Atlanta – and parking – really takes the fun out of the whole event. So I’m thrilled that Macon has a new baseball team, the Pinetoppers.  Better yet, ticket prices are really reasonable at only $5 – $8 each. You can even purchase five game ticket packs starting at only $20.

The Pinetoppers will play 42 home games this season – June through August - squaring off against teams from Albany, Milledgeville, and Warner Robins. Since Macon is the only team with a stadium, all games will be played at their stadium. It’s still not real clear who the “Warner Robins team” actually is…if any one has the 411 on this, I’d love to know.

On top of the great ticket prices, the Pinetopper will be offering some good deals throughout the season. If the kids love baseball, consider signing them up for the Kid’s Club. For only $25 they’ll get admisison to 6 games, access to special events, a t-shirt, and more. Here are the daily specials:

If you plan on taking in the Macon Film Guild’s showing of  “Police, Adjective” at the Douglass Theatre on Sunday, March 14th, be sure to make time to stop in for the Opening Reception for Artist Terry Hayes’ collection: “Beyond the Resorts: Haitians in the Dominican Republic.”

Savannah photographer and gallery owner Terry Hayes journeyed to the hinterlands of this Caribbean island to document Haitians who migrate between the adjacent countries–their native Haiti and neighboring Dominican Republic.

The opening reception is from 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM. Admission is FREE. And don’t worry if you miss the opening reception, the collection will be on display at the Douglass Theatre throughout March.

This Saturday, March 6th, from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., the Georgia Children’s Museum is hosting a Dr. Seuss Reading Day. The event will include Dr. Seuss themed arts and crafts, local celebrity readings of Dr. Seuss books, and a special guest appearance by the Cat in the Hat. Admission is only $2.

It may seem a little soon to be thinking about spring break and summer day camps, but it is nearly March and slots are sure to fill up fast as the days tick away. If you haven’t yet picked a day camp, you may want to consider the Museum of Aviation in Warner Robins.

For Spring Break (March 29 – April 2) , they’re offering day camps for 3rd – 5th Grade (Searching for Life on Mars) and 6th – 12th Grade (Mission Quest Camp).

Summer day camp runs weekly from June 14 to July 23, with programs available for children Pre-K all the way through 12th Grade. Themes range from Mad Scientists, to Flight Camp, to Princess Camp, to Under the Sea.

All programs run from 9:00 am – noon, but after care is available from noon – 4:45 pm. For more information, call the Museum of Aviation at (478) 926-5558. You can also visit their website for more information or to register.

If you are still not sure what your children are doing for Spring Break this year, you may want to consider the Museum of Arts and Science Day Camp. Their Spring Break Camp promises to help your children explore their creativity by combining the colorful world of art with the wonders of science.

The camp runs March 29 through April 2 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day and is for children in grades 1-5. Space is limited to a total of 20 campers. Cost is $120 for members and $140 for non-members.
